👉 SMHS Volunteers – Please Read ⚠️

Posted Date: 8/27/25 (4:30 PM)

Hello SMHS Families,

San Marcos Unified School District (SMUSD) updated its volunteer process last year and has made a few additional changes for this school year. We’ve shared this information in our weekly bulletin and the district has also sent multiple emails, but we want to be sure everyone has the details.

Important Reminder: All volunteers must be approved through SMUSD in order to be on campus.
This includes volunteers for athletics, dance, band, PTO, and other extracurricular or district-sponsored activities—whether during the school day, evenings, or weekends.

Volunteer Clearance Levels

LEVEL A VOLUNTEER (5+ hours per week)
  • Megan’s Law clearance
  • Tuberculosis clearance
  • Live Scan fingerprinting/background check (SMUSD covers cost)
  • Online Mandated Reporter training
  • Review & acknowledgment of Volunteer Handbook
  • Issued an official SMUSD Volunteer Badge
LEVEL B VOLUNTEER (Less than 5 hours per week)
  • Megan’s Law clearance
  • Tuberculosis clearance
  • Online Mandated Reporter training
  • Review & acknowledgment of Volunteer Handbook

Why This Matters

Student and staff safety is our top priority. After reviewing best practices as part of the SMUSD Safety Taskforce, the district determined the need for a more robust and consistent volunteer clearance process. Even if you have volunteered for years, you are required to complete the updated process to continue volunteering.

Additional Information

  • Who this applies to: All volunteers, regardless of time, day, or type of activity.
  • Unsure how often you’ll volunteer? We recommend applying as a Level A Volunteer so you have the flexibility to participate in any volunteer opportunities throughout the year.
  • Cost: The only potential cost is for a TB test or TB risk assessment. Most insurance plans cover TB tests, and local clinics such as TruCare provide them at a reasonable cost. SMUSD covers fingerprinting costs and provides Level A volunteers with a badge.
  •  If you are currently scheduled to be on campus as a volunteer, please complete this process as soon as possible.

We appreciate your continued partnership and commitment to keeping SMHS a safe and supportive place for our students!
