Welcome to the SMHS World Languages Department

Vision Statement: 

The SMHS World Languages department aspires to cultivate a deep appreciation of the diversity of languages and cultures in our students, broadening students’ perspectives and empowering them with biliteracy skills.

Mission Statement: 

The mission of the SMHS World Languages department is to support students in their acquisition of target languages by providing authentic language opportunities for them to develop the three modes of communication (interpretive, presentational, and interpersonal).

The language courses we currently offer are: 

  • Spanish - Levels 1- 3 Honors, AP Language
  • Spanish for Spanish Speakers - Levels 1 & 2
  • Spanish: Translation and Interpretation Pathway
  • French - Levels 1-3 Honors
  • American Sign Language (ASL) - Levels 2-3

SMHS is working to expand its second language offerings.

Many SMHS students elect to study one language for several years, then start their study of a second world language. We encourage language exploration and promote cultural awareness through our study programs.
